Logging into my Wordpress installation today it notified me of the release of Wordpress 2.5, and provided links to where I could download the files. As I had installed from Dreamhost’s One-Click Install panel, I went their first to see if they had the update ready, and amazingly they have. Lone time dreamhost customers know that you can wait a chile for update to be created for their system, but this time they nailed it in under 24 hours.

One click later on the Dreamhost panel and this blog was being updated, 4 minutes later it was done, and when logging into my blog all that I needed to do was update my database (not hard – it said I needed to and to click the button – I did, and it was updated.)

Cheers to Dreamhost.

For all the dreamhost lovers out there, you will be pleased to know that they have just updated their one click install of joomla to version 1.5. I had just finished installing it manually for a church website I put together, and was about to blog the finer details and then they updated. I wish I had waited (and then I would have had an easy update feature) – but then again Dreamhost hadn’t mentioned a release date. I am also happy I was forced to manually install software for the first time (not anywhere near as scary as I had thought).

For those like myself running XP on their macbooks, the release of Bootcamp 1.2 just made things a lot nicer. Previously all the drivers were packaged as one installer, which gave you no choices as to what was installed. Not a problem if you were happy to go with the defaults. I don’t like the defaults however, specifically the video drivers. I have for a long time used modified video drivers with lots more options than the default offering.

The Omega Drivers (www.omegadrivers.net) run perfectly on mobility cards, and I would highly recommend them for everyone (instead of waiting for official mobility drivers to come out). There are other drivers also which have a newer version available than the Bootcamp release (sound, wireless and intel chipset to name a few). With previous releases of Bootcamp drivers it was all or nothing, which meant running the installer, and then manually changing the video driver etc… The new package however has individual packages for each piece of hardware. You could chose to install individual components (but that would probably be a pain).

There is an easier way to pick and choose: The CD you make (or folder which you can drag to a USB drive) will have a file called setup.exe, which should autorun (if you have autorun turned on). The setup.exe file itself just calls the individual packages one by one. One nice feature of the installer is that it will skip without error any of the individual packages which are absent. To avoid having to uninstall and reinstall my preferred video driver, all I had to do was delete the folders for the video driver (3 for ATI – the three named ati****.exe). Easy as that – it install all the updates drivers apart from the ATI video drivers. I haven’t checked how up to date the other drivers are, and will post back when I do. The official changes are below:

Significant bug fixes have been made to the following technologies in this release: • Windows XP and Vista drivers • Boot Camp System Tray item • Onscreen Boot Camp help in Windows • Boot Camp Assistant Installer • Mac Drivers for Windows Installer • Apple Remote • Apple USB Modem • Apple Software Update • Trackpad • International keyboard support

The help file doesn’t appear to have anything particularly helpful. The Apple Software Update software looks just like its OSX counerpart. It should help keep everything up to date. Immediately it offers iTunes and Quicktime updates. The trackpad should now offer 2 finger scrolling (untested) and there is remote support (I’m keen to try this out, particularly in presentation software like mediashout. I’m unsure what personalisation it offers, and didn’t find any software) Comment if you find newer drivers, or info on th remote capabilities. Hamish

I thought I would post some photos of my break, seeing as I posted this address in the Christ Church newsletter. To make it worthy of your clicking, the following is for your enjoyment: This Christmas/New Year season I went to Rye, courtesy of Ros’ parents generosity. It allowed me to do one of my favourite activities: poking baby starfish.

For new years I had a great time with just a few select people. We did things like buy glowsticks and wave them around and take photos: Not the wildest new years, but I did learn from things, like that I have the tiniest bottom ever. Baby got no back whatsoever: well, thats what Annie thought (below), but I showed her. Isn’t that a funny picture of Ros. There were better ones I could have posted, but I am still angry. A few of you will know that Ros has it in for my dreadlocks. She had previously, of all places at a wedding reception in an enclosed space, decided to see what would happen were you to hold a candle under one of them. Apparently when hair gets really really knotty it changes it’s make-up to be flame retardant. Wrong. Anyhow, my reason for posting this chipmunk looking picture of Ros is because on New Years she pestered and pestered until I allowed her to trim my dreadlocks. It only took her asking for 2 hours continuously before I consented to have them cut for the first time ever. Here is what I lost: I hope you enjoyed this photo journal.

Recently I’ve been receiving more and more emails that, instead of having normal attachments, have a file called winmail.dat. This is apparently Microsoft thinking they don’t have to conform to standards, and can send things in whatever format they like instead of a format that can be read by all mail clients.

Luckily there are quick ways to extract the files from winmail.dat.

The secure way is with a little program called TNEF. It’s free and can be downloaded from here.

Alternatively if it’s not that private, a guy called Balázs Bárány has made a nice little page that lets your winmail.dat file, and then let you download the files that are hidden within. It can be found here. I just went through the process in 25 seconds. Not a bad fix until Microsoft plays nice with their mail standards.

Read my Amazon Guide for Aussies to figure out how much you will save, and by clicking on them from my page and buying them you support a church plant! Here is the list I would make if I had enough power to make some reading compulsory. We all know the helpfulness of the one-page description that introduces books of the Bible in Study Bibles. The below are an expansion of that one page.

They are not meant to be read in one sitting. In fact, you probably will only read 1 chapter of the first two books in the first month. Here is an example of how I would use it:

1. So I’m starting a series on Matthew in my small group. I would read Matthew. I would probably write down all my questions before turning to the first book – "How to read the Bible Book by Book". This gives me 8 pages about the book of Matthew, about it’s author, it’s time of writing, where it was written, who is he writing it to etc… Most importantly it will alert me to things I need to look out for.

2.A few chapters into Matthew I’d find some parables, and want to know what bits are important. Is everything in a parable true? Is it just the lesson that’s important? Are there always parallels between the characters and real life, that we should try and decode? The second book has a chapter on this genre called "parable" – and it gives me the keys to understand which bits are important and which are not.

3. Lastly whenever I came across a term I had no idea about, I’d open the New Bible Dictionary, which is exactly what is sounds like, a dictionary but of Bible words. Done. To understand trickier bits I’d need to turn to a commentary, and I’ll post a list of good ones soon.

After years of going from free host to free host, I’m using a professional level domain host in the US, that costs US$95.40 a year, but if you refer someone you get paid US$97. Each time. Potentially this is a good way of making money. I have only referred one person so far, but that’s enough each year to take care of the cost of having a hosting service that is a so good. You can put unlimited domains on it, and you get a free dot.com when you start. Want more?…

Choosing a domain host is daunting. Google it and you are presented with too many options. Most people I know start with a freebie, maybe 50 meg without much allowance for traffic, and soon find that this doesn’t cut it. I went through a few, some good, some not so good. The worst was having our server in the US die in a fire.

I now use a host that isn’t cheap but that ends up being free. Tricky heh. There is big money in referring people to Internet hosts, and companies make a living JUST referring people. One group, Dreamhost, instead hands these finders fees onto customheh.

My story: I signed up for the “Crazy Domain Insane” plan which costs US$7.95 a month. You can put an unlimited amount ofDreamhoston it (I have 3), you can store up to 20 gig worth of whatever on there, and that increases by 160 meg a week, and you are allowed 1 terabyte of traffic, which goes up by 8 gig a week. Like me, I’m sure you cannot come close to using all of this. That’s US$95.40 a year.
Every person you refer earns you money. A whopping $97. I’ve referred 1 person this year so far. Paid for. (Actually I chose not to take the once of payment of $97, but 10% of my friends payments forever – good if you think they will be there for years). All I need to do is refer 1 person a year and my hosting is paid for. You could try and make money from this if you think you can advertise it enough. I’m happy having the best hosting plan, way beyond my actual usage, capable of hosting as many websites as I or my friends could make for free.

You can read the posting directly before this one to see some of the dangers of using Google’s Search Box on your website, and this is especially true of Churches. On Google’s page with the code for puting a great little search box on your website, they give you three options.

Google Free web search

Google Free SafeSearch

Google Free web search with site search

I want number 4, which doesn’t exist, but its easy to make it yourself…

You can grab the code for all of these after you accept the terms and conditions on this page: http://www.google.com/searchcode.html The last is the best, as it lets users search your site for content. The problem is that Google don’t supply a way for you to turn SAFESEARCH on for this option. Most of you interested in this won’t have explicit material on your site that would come up, but the search page does have Ads on it, and these are not filtered unless SAFESEARCH is turned on. Again, read the post directly before this to see how an Anglican Media Group in Melbourne Australia served me links to lots of bi-curious singles when I searched for a statement of belief on sexuality. There is only one thing that needs changing in the code of the Google Free web search with site search to turn SAFESEARCH on. How? Change the sixth line of code from to Done. Enjoy not serving porn to your parishoners.

Google’s search bar on you site makes a lot of sense. It’s powerful and only takes a few lines of code. But as I observed on the Anglican Media Melbourne Website (http://www.media.anglican.com.au/), sometimes it actually works against you. I had a request for information on "what the church says about sexuality"? I remember there being some sort of "official" statement somewhere, and after chasing link around for a little while ended up at the abolvementioned site. Aha! A google search box. No doubt that will help me find any statement thats been released. So I plugged in "sexuality" an hit go, searching only the Anglican Media Website. That should be safe! Unfortunately it doesn’t just return results from the website, but also sponsored links. Here was what I got:

So there we go. I’m trying to find a statement of belief of the Anglican Church, but instead I find hundreds of thousands bisexual and bicurious singles. I know that using Google adsense you are able to block certain ads, but I am unaware how one can restrict the results if taking advantage of Google’s free site search. Anyone? Hamish Update: I was wondering whether the ads appeared because the site had an adsense account. I found that they are using the default code for anyone wanting to add a cool google search box to their site. It turns out that there is in fact another option that is "safe", and is available from the same page you get the normal code. I would suggest to churches that they test their Google search boxes to see whether they are safe or not. The difference is only a few letters on 3 lines of code. See the differences here: http://www.google.com/searchcode.html Update 2: Well my first follow is wrong (a little bit). That "safesearch" code is only for a web search box, but not for the Google Free web search with site search, which is the one we want to search our own site. I’ll post the changes you need to make to the code to enable the Google Free web search with site search PLUS Safesearch, which I think Google should tell you about on the same page. Congratulations to Melbourne Anglican Media. Within 4 hours of me emailing them they now have "Safesearch" enabled on their Google Site Search. Someone’s doing their job. It now looks like this:
